Lately, Sienna and Josh had been playing in bed all the time. Maybe it was the excitement of having an actual bed and not a thin sheet. But they were still poorer than most families.
Laura, meanwhile, has not adjusted in school life yet. She mostly sat alone in the corner at lunch and never talked to anyone, except for the time when a girl asked permission to borrow a pencil.
Her sister Cassidy was the complete opposite. She already had a group of girls revolving around her and often came home late, which she knew her parents would not agree with.
One afternoon after school ended, Laura saw Cassidy sneak off school grounds and in the newly-built park. "Hmph,"she muttered. She followed Cassidy in the park and hid behind a tree.
And there her sister was, talking withh a boy that looked at least four years older than her!
But what she didn't know was that Cassidy could see her! "Laura what are you doing?"Cassidy snapped suddenly, shocking Laura.
Laura was at a loss of words. "That's y-y-your b-b-boyfriend!"she hollered suddenly.
Cassidy shook her head. "No, silly. V.K. here is a senior member of the Yearbook Club and I'm interested to join. Now let's head home,"she explained, rolling her eyes. Laura sulkily followed her home.
When they returned home they found their parents in a big fight and Kylie screaming her head off on the floor!
"So you think we had money?"Sienna yelled, on the verge of tears. "Well, at least if you know we didn't have any, why did you do it?" Josh yelled back. "It was your idea!""You didn't tell me we didn't have any money!"
Cassidy quickly picked Kylie up and put her in the highchair she found earlier outside. Laura sheepishly followed, not wanting to get involved.
"Shhh Kylie, shhh. Big sister's here for you,"Cassidy comforted to the wailing Kylie. She gave Kylie some baby goo which seemed to calm her down. Laura, meanwhile, started doing her homework.
At dinner time everyone was unusually quiet. It was Sienna who broke the silence. "Girls, I have something to tell you."
"You're going to have another little brother or sister."
Josh's face turned red. Cassidy bit her lip - she knew she had to help out with Josh's reaction and their lack of money. Laura whooped for joy - after all she was still a plain child.
Sienna sighed and excused herself before puking in the toilet.
She went to sleep in Cassidy's bed, whereas Cassidy had no choice but to sleep with her dad. She could already sense hard times in the Rivers household.
The next day, Sienna got a job as a papergirl, Josh as an organ donor and Cassidy as a receptionist.
